How to Download Magento

The Magento Community Edition is a piece of open source software that can be used to power your online store. It is free to download and open for modification. Seeing as the software is open source, you will be given the core code, which can be added to and configured in order to enhance the functionality of your Magento store. You can even integrate extensions with your Magento software, many of which are available from the Magento Connect market place.

For more information about Magento Community and the differences between the software and the Enterprise edition, see the Magento Hub page.

Magento Community Edition Support

Before downloading the Community Edition of Magento, it is worth keeping in mind that Magento does not provide technical support for this software. However you can get answers to your questions from other community members on the forum. Magento benefits from having a very active community, with members of the forums being more than willing to help out fellow merchants and developers.

We also highly recommend that you seek the help of a third party Magento agency (like Online Media Direct) who will be able to assist you in setting up your Magento store, configuring its settings and customising it to meet your needs and requirements. We provide bespoke Magento services at affordable prices to ecommerce businesses of all sizes and from all industries.

Downloading Magento

If you have made the wise decision to choose the Community Edition as your ecommerce platform, then you can follow the instructions below to download and install it. If you were tempted to take the somewhat easier route of downloading Shopify instead, see our page on 7 reasons why Magento is better than Shopify.

Step-by-step guide to downloading and installing Magento

Visit to check that your server meets the Magento system requirements.

1.First you will need to visit the Magento website ( and check that your server meets all of the minimum requirements. To do this, go to Resources > System Requirements. It is important to make sure that your server meets all of the listed requirements in order to install Magento properly.

2. Once you have checked your server is compatible with Magento go to Downloads and select ‘Download Magento.’

3. Before you download Magento, you will be asked if you want to register. Whilst this isn’t required, we do recommend registering your details, as it will allow you to post questions on the forum, post and edit wiki articles and report bugs.

Make sure you choose the Full Release version of Magento to download.

4. On the next screen you will be able to select the version of Magento you wish to install. Choose the Full Release version that you want to download and click the ‘download’ button.

5. In the window that pops up select ‘save file’ and click OK.

6. Once the file has finished downloading, navigate to the location you downloaded it to and unzip the folder using your favourite archive programme.

7. You will then need to upload the entire Magento folder to your server using a programme like FileZilla. Double click on the folder to select it.

8. Next, you will need to enter the host name, your username and your password, before choosing the folder you want to upload Magento to.

9. Now drag and drop the folder into your directory.

10.Once the files have finished uploading, go to your web browser and enter the address where you uploaded the Magento folder.

Now we can go onto installing Magento

1. When you first open the Magento Installation Wizard you will be presented with the terms and conditions. You need to read through these and agree to them before you can proceed to install Magento.

2. On the next screen you will be able to select a locale e.g. ‘English (United Kingdom) Time Zone: Greenwich Mean Time Zone (UTC+00:00), Default Currency: GBP (Great British Pounds.)’

3. Continue to the next page and you will find your host, database and username have been entered automatically. If they are different from the information shown, you have the opportunity to change them on this screen.

4. You will also need to create a database on the server before continuing with the installation. Simply enter your database name, username and password. Scroll down and you will see more options where you can select the base URL, admin path and secure URLs. A final scroll down the page will take you to Session Storage Options. Here you can set the session data to save to a specific file system or database.

5. Keep in mind that all folders must be writeable in order for the installation to take place. If you have any problems you will need to go to where your files are located and configure the permissions. We have provided a guide to this further down the page.

6. The next stage is to create an admin account. Here you will need to enter your personal information (first name, last name, email) your login information (username and password) and your encryption key (optional).

7. You will now have installed the Magento platform and are ready to experience it! Be sure to note down your encryption key and keep it in a safe place. From here you will have the option to go to the store frontend or admin backend. We recommend heading to the backend so you can begin setting up your Magento store !

Making your Magento folders writeable

1.Go to the location where your files are located on your server.

2.Right click the file and select file attributes.

3.You will be able to check each box manually or type in a numeric value.

4.Proceed until the permissions are set for all the required folders.

5.Head back to your web browser and continue the Magento installation process.
